Food businesses have to check that they meet with food hygiene regulations and food safety audit standards. But whether food businesses can keep up with the rising costs will determine whether they can survive.

Food law is designed to protect the public from food that is unfit to eat. The costs of compliance with food hygiene regulations will soon add up for food businesses, some have had to stop trading completely due to expensive practices such as the technical cost for microscopic analysis of their ingredients.

The sheer size of the food business was not the main reason for its non-compliance with food hygiene regulations, as breaches have been committed by small and large firms.

If the internet is cited as the blame for the ongoing high street bloodbath, for food businesses, it may be able to help. By taking an online food hygiene course you will receive a food hygiene certificate which is evidence that you comply with the law for food handlers.

The European Union (EU) lays down the regulations for food safety and food hygiene, with the aim being for a good level of knowledge of food hygiene to ultimately be achieved by food handlers in member states. It remains to be seen whether the reason given by food businesses for any future food hygiene breaches is that they simply could not afford it. Perhaps a scheme is required that can ensure all businesses, whether small or large, new or old, can obtain compliance with the law for food handlers without it resulting in their closure, after all, the higher the food hygiene standards, the more likely a food business will be to have repeat customers. People want to be able to buy and eat their food without worrying about food hygiene standards, or whether or not a company is knowingly in breach of hygiene regulations.

The sad reality is that some businesses have done so and now need all the support they can get.
