Iceland delicacy of eating Puffin Heart is a tradition
In Iceland, puffins are hunted as a sport by using large nets, and the puffin heart is then served and eaten raw and warm, a tradition that is considered a delicacy in various parts of the country.
The heart can also be cooked, however it may come as a surprise to learn that puffins have been eaten in Iceland for many years. A puffin is a little bird which stands out for its colourful beak, and is not naturally associated with being something to be found on a menu in a restaurant.
More strange foods and dishes are gaining publicity in recent times, with TV chef Heston Blumenthal part of a movement that is about being creative and inventive with food to come up with fresh new ideas. Whether Blumenthal would approve of eating a puffin heart is a different matter altogether though.
Although there are many animals that are killed and eaten, the fact the puffin is one of them seems to resonate in ones mind with more discomfort than perhaps is the case with certain other animals.
